IUPE Education: Building Happiness with Love and Knowledge - part one

Learning process is one of the humankind wonderful things.

The most people learn, more they can understand reality around them.

This is the way humankind can interfere on reality, in order to change it.

We know, knowledge, and the wisdom to use it, is what makes possible: discoveries, inventions and all other humankind creations.

We need all of this, in order to have a positive social change, and to contribute to scientific and technological progress and, of course, to the humankind evolution.

It is always a good idea to remember Erik Erikson teachings: When people reach the thirties, they need to be sure they have contributed to their families or to the society.

To be sure, to achieve this goal, people need knowledge and wisdom. This satisfaction is the most important point to achieve happiness.

So, let us go to our main subject!

How can we ensure total learning ability to our children?

How can we ensure our children will be part of productive and smart people groups?

If we ensure this, we are assuring their happiness

For each stage of life, there is a different need.

Let us keep looking at children in their first stage of life, which goes up to seven years old.

First, we must understand the basic and primordial values to our lives.

I am sure these values are Love and Knowledge.

Everything else are nothing but complements to these two basic values.

We, parents and teachers, are responsible to transmit love, at this early stage of life. This is our very task.

It is most important to understand it, because we cannot allow our impatience, our stress, or our “lack of time” to destruct such transmission of the necessary and indispensable love.

To love a child is the most important thing in order to get their confidence.

When you get this, you assure their harmonic and balanced intellectual development.

Parents and educators need being able to develop and keep this love transmission to the children.

If we have this love transmission, we are helping to build love inside children mind.

This is the main part.

Now let us see some suggestions to assure plain development of children ability to learn.

We can define three main steps in the acquiring knowledge process:

1st step: Children perceive external reality, by capturing their signals through all its sensor elements.

2nd step: Their brain tries to relate signals received with others memories already stored.

3rd step: If the signal relates with others, there will be understanding, and the knowledge, related to this signal, will be updated. If there is no memory alike, the brain will create a new memory.

The children we are studying are very young, so, they are still developing their external capture ability.

It is exactly with this kind of children at this stage, that we need to dedicate our educational investment!

We have to work on developing their: visual, hearing, gustatory, olfactory and tactile ability, as soon as: temperature variation, humidity sensation, and so on.

How does this capture occur?

Human body has sensor elements, all over the body.

Each one of them has a special feature, but all of them have something in common.

All of them transform the external signals into electric signals and send these signals to the brain.

There are sensors transforming incoming sound waves into electric pulses. They are located into the cochlea.

There are sensors transforming light rays into electric pulses. They are located in the retina at the back of the eyes.

There are two types: The rod cells get luminosity; The cone cells get color frequencies.

In order to identify smell and taste there are the chemical cells located on the tongue and nostrils.

All over the skin, there are sensors that detect the tactile sensations (pressure and friction).

There are, as well, special cells detecting temperature variations and humidity.

It is possible we have other transforming cell types but they are out from current scientific knowledge.

All those electrical pulses goes to the neural networks inside the brain. These neural networks process these signals and transform them into world understanding. This creates knowledge and develops the ability to learn.

All these sensor elements as soon as the neural networks are in the stage of developing inside children brain.

It is very common differences between children’s cognitive development. Some children have more difficult than others do.

Our function, in this case, is to create all kind of: exercises, games, hobbies and amusements, in order to stimulate their sensors development.

To stimulate sensor elements means to develop the entire brain, expanding their cognitive ability and the correct world understanding.

In order to avoid teachers forgot some of the sensor elements; we have prepared a schedule table, directed to childhood education schools. It is easy: we should work one sensor element each month.

This is the table:

January – temperature and humidity
February – Vision
March – hearing
April – tactile sensation
May – smell
June – taste

And repeat all from july.

We can extract ideas for such activities, for example, from psycho development exercises.

Teachers have to develop their own creativity to use all resources at their disposal.

One very interesting example is the Garden of Sensations, at Curitiba, city of Paraná State, in Brazil.

This Garden has exposed several species of plants and flowers, for blind people “see by hands” and smell.

A metal handrail supports blind or low vision people. In front of each plant or flower there is a card written in braille.

Some schools send their students to visit the garden. They can understand the perception difficulties of blind people.

As you can see, there can be quite a lot of ideas. We are free to create strategies, exercises, games, hobbies and all kind of amusements.

For hearing exercises, it is very important to do it at low level, but using all frequencies we can achieve.

To change direction of the sound source is a good way to develop telemetry ability.

People think about baby rattle, little bells, and sound mobiles. They are very interesting, we know that, and I have already used it.

However, we cannot forget classic melodies are very interesting as well, mainly because of their frequencies and the harmony.

Olfactory exercises are very good, mainly for boys. They usually have much more difficult than girls do, in differentiate smells.

Taste exercises are more difficult to do due to the large number of children with food intolerance.

Paintings, modeling, drawings, and so on, are good vision exercises.

One other good advantage using these exercises is the opportunity to detect difficulties on children perception processing, like dyscalculia, dyslexia and so on.
